Ways
to Protect Your Home:
-
Smoke detectors: Installing a smoke detector
in every bedroom and keeping one centrally located on each floor of your
home. Test smoke detectors monthly, and replace batteries once a
year.
-
Be prepared: Make sure all family members know how
to dial 911, and practice a fire drill every 6 months. Arrange a central
meeting place at a tree or other landmark in front of your house.
Train family members to go straight to the meeting place after they
leave the house. Teach children never to go back in the house, and
never hide under beds or in closets.
-
Prevent fires: Keep your home free of oily rags and
trash buildup, and keep cleaning materials in a ventilated area and away
from any heat source.
-
Never overload circuits. Check your lamps, appliance
cords, and light switches to make sure there is no faulty wiring.
-
Child-proofing your home. Purchase safety plugs to
reduce shock hazard, store all household chemicals out of reach of children,
and keep adult sporting goods in locked cabinets.
-
Backyard safety. Put garden and game equipment away
after use, surround swimming pool by a high fence, and never let children
swim unattended.
-
Prevent Hot Water Burns: Reduce the temperature of
your hot water to between 120 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit by turning down
the control of your hot water heater.
-
Be a careful cook. Never wear long sleeves when you
cook, as they can catch fire. Keep the handles of you pots tuned inward
so the pots can't be knocked over, and never put foil or other metals in
the microwave oven.
-
Prevent poison: never store inedible products in
the same place as food. Discard leftover medications by flushing them down
the toilet.
-
Candles are becoming more popular, and so are accidents
with them. Never leave a lit candle unattended.
-
Never smoke in bed! Careless smoking is a leading
cause of fire deaths in the United States.
